Mit Call of Duty erwartet Sie einer der intensivsten Ego-Shooter der letzten Zeit. Nicht als heldenhafte Ein-Mann-Armee, sondern als ganz normaler Soldat erleben Sie die Wirren des Zweiten Weltkrieges.
Multiplayer-Fans stehen insgesamt vier Mehrspielermodi ("Hinter feindlichen Linien", "Bergung", "Suchen & Zerstren" sowie klassisches Deathmatch) und zwlf Karten zur Verfgung. In der Solo-Kampagne von Call of Duty spielen Sie nacheinander auf Seiten der Amerikaner, der Briten und der Sowjets. Dabei verschlgt es Sie in die Normandie, nach Polen, nach Norwegen, nach Stalingrad und schlielich sogar nach Berlin, wo Sie auf dem Reichstag die Siegesflagge hissen mssen.
Inhaltlich orientiert sich Call of Duty an Filmen wie Der Soldat James Ryan und Duell. Enemy at the Gates. Spielerisch standen vor allem die Medal-of-Honor-Titel Pate. Die hnlichkeit kommt nicht von ungefhr, schlielich hat beinahe das gesamte Team der Entwicklerschmiede Infinity Ward zuvor an Medal of Honor: Allied Assault mitgearbeitet.
In Sachen Atmosphre setzt Call of Duty neue Mastbe: Wenn man eingepfercht mit anderen Soldaten im Landungsboot ber die Wolga nach Stalingrad schippert, whrend links und rechts Granaten das Wasser aufspritzen lassen und deutsche Stukas im Tiefflug mit ratternden MGs ber den Fluss donnern, zieht man den Kopf unwillkrlich tief zwischen die Schultern. Hier wird klar: Im Krieg gibt es keine Helden, nur Menschen, die berleben wollen.
Die Aufgaben, die es in den insgesamt 26 Missionen zu bewltigen gilt, sind ausgesprochen vielfltig. Rtselelemente oder Sprungeinlagen werden Sie allerdings vergeblich suchen. Mal geht es darum, Luftabwehrstellungen auszuschalten, dann mssen Sie einen Damm infiltrieren, Dokumente aus einem feindlichen Bunker stehlen oder eine Brcke so lange halten, bis Verstrkung eintrifft. In manchen Missionen nehmen Sie die Gegner von der Landeflche eines Lasters unter Beschuss, oder feuern aus dem Seitenfenster eines Autos. Gegen Ende bernehmen Sie sogar die Kontrolle ber einen Panzer.
Die Grafik glnzt mit realistischen Texturen und viel Liebe zum Detail. Und obwohl einige der Karten recht gro und verwinkelt sind, verluft man sich nie, so lange man bei seinen KI-Kameraden bleibt. Das sollten Sie auch noch aus einem anderen Grund tun: Schlielich sind Sie in Call of Duty nicht als personifiziertes Abrisskommando Marke Rambo unterwegs, sondern als normaler Soldat. Allein htten Sie gegen die deutsche bermacht nicht die geringste Chance. Die meiste Zeit ber kmpfen Sie alle Seite an Seite mit mehreren Mnnern aus Ihrer Einheit, die selbststndig agieren und ihre Aufgaben souvern erledigen. Nur ganz selten versperrt Ihnen der eine oder andere Kamerad mal eine Trffnung. Allerdings agieren nicht nur Ihre eigenen Leute beraus clever, sondern auch der Gegner. Widersacher gehen bei Beschuss in Deckung, lugen um Ecken herum, um ein paar Schsse auf Sie abzufeuern, nehmen vor Handgranaten Reiaus und versuchen, Sie in Hinterhalte zu locken.
Ihr umfangreiches Waffenarsenal reicht von Pistolen und Granaten ber Scharfschtzengewehre bis zu MPs und Gewehren. Da man jedoch neben einer Pistole und einer Handvoll Granaten lediglich eine Nah- und eine Fernkampfwaffe bei sich tragen kann, sollte man sich genau berlegen, welche Wumme man mitnimmt. Ebenso realistisch ist, dass Sie schlechter zielen, wenn Sie sich bewegen und nicht allzu viele Treffer aushalten, bevor Sie den letzten Spielstand laden drfen.
